Theory

The add11 chord adds a perfect eleventh (17 semitones) to the major triad. C add11 = C-E-G-F, G add11 = G-B-D-C. The eleventh creates harmonic friction with the major third (a semitone apart). The third is often omitted to avoid this friction, creating a more open sound close to sus4.
