Theoretical construction

Mixolydian mode is the fifth degree of the major scale. If you play a C major scale starting from G, you get G Mixolydian. Its unique characteristic is the minor seventh (♭7), creating a tonic chord I7 (dominant). This ♭7 avoids the strong pull of the leading tone (7) to the tonic, creating a more relaxed and 'groovy' atmosphere. In blues and rock, Mixolydian is omnipresent on dominant chords (V7). It's also the basic mode of modal rock music.
