The sus2 chord (suspended 2) is a triad where the third is replaced by a major second. This substitution creates an open and ambiguous sound, neither major nor minor.

Theory

The sus2 chord replaces the third (which determines major or minor mode) with a major second (2 semitones above the root). C sus2 = C-D-G, D sus2 = D-E-A. The absence of the third creates a gentle tension that typically resolves to a major or minor chord.
