The inversions of the dominant 7th chord (1st, 2nd and 3rd) enable smooth harmonic progressions. Each inversion places a different note in the bass while preserving the tritone tension.

Theory
The 7th chord has 3 inversions: 1st (3-5-♭7-1), 2nd (5-♭7-1-3), 3rd (♭7-1-3-5). The tritone (3-♭7) remains present in all inversions, creating dominant tension.
